Financial Secretary · 1922–2008
Who is Sir Vassel Johnson?
Vassel Johnson was born in Jamaica in 1922 and moved with his family to Cuba at the age of four before settling in Grand Cayman in 1934. He rose through the Cayman Islands civil service to become Financial Secretary, a post he held from 1965 to 1982, during which he played a central role in shaping the legal and regulatory foundations of what would become the Cayman Islands' offshore financial services industry, one of the pillars of the territory's modern economy. After leaving the Financial Secretary post he continued to serve the government as a member of the Executive Council from 1984 to 1988, offering continued guidance during a period of rapid economic growth. His decades of public service were recognized with an MBE in 1980 and an OBE in 1970, and in February 1994 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony held in front of the Legislative Assembly Building, making him the only Caymanian ever to receive a knighthood. Colleagues and successors credited him with the discipline and foresight that allowed a small island territory to build a globally significant financial center. Sir Vassel Johnson died on 12 November 2008.
