Who is Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan?
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1966 and became the first President of the United Arab Emirates when the federation of seven emirates was formed on 2 December 1971, a post he held until his death in 2004. Before ruling Abu Dhabi, he served for years as the Al Nahyan family's representative in the Al Ain region, gaining a reputation for fairness and for early investment in agriculture and local development. As ruler, he directed Abu Dhabi's growing oil revenues into roads, schools, hospitals, and housing, and he was the principal architect of uniting the once-separate Trucial States into a single federal nation. He championed environmental and wildlife conservation, sponsoring large-scale tree-planting and desert-greening programs, and he pursued a foreign policy centered on regional cooperation and generous international aid. Widely referred to in the UAE as the "Father of the Nation," his vision for federal unity, education, and diversification away from oil continues to shape Emirati state policy and national identity long after his death in November 2004.
