Sam Nujoma

Founding President of Namibia · 1929–2025

Who is Sam Nujoma?

Sam Nujoma was Namibia's founding president and one of Africa's most prominent anti-colonial leaders. Born on 12 May 1929 in Etunda village in Ovamboland, he worked as a railway clerk in Windhoek before becoming involved in nationalist politics in the 1950s. In 1959 he co-founded and led the Ovamboland People's Organization, which evolved in 1960 into the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), the movement that led Namibia's independence struggle. Forced into exile that same year, Nujoma spent nearly three decades abroad, based largely in Tanzania and Zambia, building international diplomatic support for Namibian independence and directing SWAPO's political and armed campaign against South African rule. He returned to Namibia in September 1989 to lead SWAPO to victory in United Nations-supervised elections, and was sworn in as the country's first president on 21 March 1990 when Namibia formally gained independence. He served three presidential terms until 2005 and was later honored by Namibia's Parliament with the titles "Founding President of the Republic of Namibia" and "Father of the Namibian Nation." He died on 8 February 2025 at the age of 95.
