Who is Sabah I bin Jaber?
Sheikh Sabah I bin Jaber Al-Sabah was the founding ruler of Kuwait and the first sheikh of the Al-Sabah dynasty that continues to govern the country today. His family, tracing its roots to the Anizah tribal confederation of central Arabia, settled in the small coastal town of Kuwait during the early eighteenth century after migrating from the interior in search of better conditions along the Gulf. Around 1718, the heads of Kuwait's leading families gathered and chose Sabah bin Jaber as their sheikh, entrusting him with responsibility for external relations, security, and mediation while other families managed trade and the town's internal affairs. Under his leadership, Kuwait grew as a modest but stable trading settlement on the Gulf coast, developing ties with Mesopotamia, the Arabian interior, and India. By 1752 Kuwait's autonomy from the Emir of Al-Hasa was effectively recognized, laying groundwork for its emergence as an independent sheikhdom. Sabah I ruled for roughly four decades until his death in 1762, and his descendants have held power in Kuwait ever since, making him the founding figure of one of the Gulf's most enduring ruling houses.
