Who is Rubén Blades?
Rubén Blades is a Panamanian singer-songwriter, actor, and lawyer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern salsa music for infusing the genre with socially and politically conscious lyrics. Born in Panama City, he studied law at the University of Panama before pursuing music, eventually earning a master's degree in international law from Harvard University. Working with bandleaders such as Willie Colón and later his own group Seis del Solar, he wrote and performed landmark songs including "Pedro Navaja" (1978), a narrative salsa classic, blending Latin American storytelling traditions with themes of poverty, injustice, and urban life. Over his career he has won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards and built a parallel career as a film and television actor in the United States. Blades also entered Panamanian politics, founding the Papa Egoró movement and running for president of Panama in 1994, and later served as Panama's Minister of Tourism from 2004 to 2009. He remains one of Panama's best-known cultural ambassadors internationally.
