Rainier III, Prince of Monaco

Rainier III de Monaco

Sovereign Prince of Monaco · 1923–2005

Who is Rainier III, Prince of Monaco?

Rainier III reigned as Sovereign Prince of Monaco from 1949 until his death in 2005, one of the longest reigns in modern European history, and is widely credited with transforming Monaco from a struggling post-war principality into a prosperous international center of finance, tourism, and luxury. He diversified Monaco's economy beyond the Monte Carlo Casino, encouraged banking and light industry, expanded the principality's land area through ambitious land reclamation projects such as Fontvieille, and modernized its infrastructure and international standing, including Monaco's admission to the United Nations in 1993. His 1956 marriage to American film star Grace Kelly drew global attention to the small principality and became one of the defining royal stories of the twentieth century; the couple had three children, including his successor, Prince Albert II. Rainier III also worked to update Monaco's constitutional framework and oversaw the principality's growth as a hub for international business and events such as the Monaco Grand Prix. He remains a central figure in Monaco's transformation into the modern city-state it is today.
