Pravind Jugnauth

Former Prime Minister of Mauritius · 1961

Who is Pravind Jugnauth?

Pravind Kumar Jugnauth was born on 25 December 1961 in La Caverne, Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius, the son of Anerood Jugnauth, who later served as both Prime Minister and President of Mauritius. He earned a law degree from the University of Buckingham in England and a master's degree in business law from Aix-Marseille University in France. He entered politics within his father's Militant Socialist Movement party, becoming Minister of Agriculture in his late thirties, and took over leadership of the party in 2003. When Anerood Jugnauth resigned as Prime Minister in January 2017, Pravind Jugnauth was appointed to succeed him, a transition that drew opposition criticism over dynastic succession. He led his Alliance Morisien coalition to victory in the 2019 general election and remained Prime Minister until his coalition lost the November 2024 general election to Navin Ramgoolam's Alliance du Changement. During his premiership, Mauritius pursued its long-running international legal campaign over the Chagos Archipelago, welcoming the International Court of Justice's February 2019 advisory opinion finding the UK's continued administration of the Archipelago unlawful, and the January 2021 ITLOS Special Chamber judgment that confirmed Mauritian sovereignty over the territory.
