Journalist, Activist, and Politician · 1923–2001

Who is Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson?

Philip S. W. Goldson was a Belizean newspaper editor, independence activist, and politician recognized alongside George Price as one of Belize's two formally designated National Heroes. Born on 25 July 1923 in Belize City, he became a founding member of the People's United Party (PUP) in the early 1950s, helping to launch the movement for self-government from Britain, before later co-founding the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) in the 1970s after a political split. As founder and editor of The Belize Billboard newspaper, Goldson used the press to challenge colonial authority, campaign for press freedom, and hold political leaders accountable, at times facing imprisonment for his outspoken journalism. He served for many years as a member of the National Assembly and held ministerial posts, championing education and labor rights throughout his career. Goldson was known for his uncompromising nationalism and insistence on full territorial integrity for Belize during boundary disputes with neighboring Guatemala. He died on 3 October 2001, and Belize's National Heroes and Benefactors Day honors his legacy alongside Price's each year.
