Who is Ousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi?

Ousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, popularly known by her pen name "Fatat Al Arab" (Girl of the Arabs), was one of the most celebrated female poets in the Emirati and wider Gulf Nabati (Bedouin vernacular) poetic tradition. Born in the Al Ain region into a Bedouin family, she composed poetry from a young age in a literary form historically dominated by men, addressing themes of pride, homeland, wisdom, and social commentary in the classical Nabati meter. Her verses circulated widely through oral recitation and later through recordings and print collections, earning her recognition from UAE cultural institutions as a pioneering voice for women within the region's oral literary heritage. She was honored in her lifetime by UAE cultural bodies, including recognition tied to the country's poetry festivals and heritage preservation programs, which documented and archived her work as part of the national record of Nabati poetry. She died in 2018, and her poetry continues to be studied and cited as a landmark contribution by a woman to a tradition that shaped Emirati oral culture for generations.
