Who is Nicolae Iorga?
Nicolae Iorga was a Romanian historian, politician, literary critic, and one of the most prolific scholars in Romanian history, credited with authoring or contributing to thousands of works across history, literature, and public affairs. Born in Botoșani, he studied in Iași, Paris, Berlin, and Leipzig, earning his doctorate before returning to Romania to teach at the University of Bucharest, where he became a defining figure in Romanian historiography. He founded the Institute of South-East European Studies and wrote extensively on Byzantine history, the history of the Romanian principalities, and Romanian national identity, helping to shape modern understanding of the country's medieval and early modern past. Politically active throughout his life, he co-founded a nationalist party, served as a member of parliament, and briefly served as prime minister of Romania in 1931-1932. An outspoken opponent of the fascist Iron Guard movement, he was assassinated by Iron Guard members in November 1940 near Ploiești. His historical works, public lectures, and cultural institutions left a lasting mark on Romanian scholarship and national self-understanding.
