Who is Traditional Norf'k Wisdom?
Traditional Norf'k Wisdom gathers the sayings, figurative expressions, and everyday idioms of the Norf'k language, the English-Tahitian creole spoken on Norfolk Island by the descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives who resettled from Pitcairn Island in 1856. Unlike nations with centuries of catalogued proverb literature, Norfolk Island is a tiny community of only a few thousand people, and its oral heritage survives chiefly in short figurative phrases, nicknames for memorable local sayings, and lines still recited from Norf'k songs and poems, rather than in a large formal proverb collection. These expressions draw on the island's maritime, whaling, and farming life and carry the community's characteristic dry humour and warmth. Because Norf'k was actively discouraged in schools for much of the twentieth century, many of these sayings survive today only through the efforts of islanders and linguists working to record and revive the language. This platform presents them honestly as a small, living oral tradition rather than padding them with invented material.
