Nanny of the Maroons
Queen Nanny
Maroon Leader and National Hero · circa late 17th century–circa mid-18th century
Who is Nanny of the Maroons?
Nanny, widely known as Queen Nanny, was a legendary leader of the Windward Maroons, communities of formerly enslaved Africans who won and defended their freedom in the mountainous interior of eastern Jamaica during the eighteenth century. Precise biographical dates are not established with certainty in the historical record; she is believed to have been born in West Africa, possibly among the Akan people, and to have led her community through the First Maroon War against British colonial forces, chiefly based at Nanny Town in the Blue Mountains during the 1720s-1740s. Oral tradition and Maroon accounts credit her with strong strategic and spiritual leadership, coordinating resistance that helped secure the 1739-1740 peace treaties recognizing Maroon land and autonomy. In 1976, the Jamaican government declared her a National Hero, the only woman among Jamaica's National Heroes, and her image now appears on the Jamaican $500 banknote. She remains a powerful symbol of resistance to slavery, African cultural survival, and women's leadership in Jamaican history, celebrated annually in Maroon communities such as Moore Town.
