Miyambi ya Chichewa

Folk & Oral Tradition

Who is Traditional Malawi Wisdom?

Traditional Malawi Wisdom gathers the proverbs, or miyambi, passed down orally for generations chiefly in Chichewa (also called Chinyanja), the language of the Chewa people and the most widely spoken tongue in Malawi. These sayings have no single named author; they are the shared inheritance of farmers, fisherfolk, hunters, elders, and storytellers who distilled long experience of village life, family duty, and the natural world into compact, memorable images, drawing on animals such as the crocodile, hyena, and elephant, and everyday scenes of firewood, mats, and roasting pans. Passed down at firesides and through initiation ceremonies, they teach patience, humility before elders, cooperation, honesty, and caution. Scholars and missionary linguists, including Reverend Toon van Kessel's collection of a thousand Chewa proverbs and Montie Mlachila's "Miyambi ya m'Chichewa," have worked to document and preserve this oral heritage in writing. This platform records widely attested forms and presents them as traditional rather than attributing them to any one person.
