Who is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum?
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has served as Ruler of Dubai since 2006 and as Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, continuing the development path his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, began decades earlier. Born on 15 July 1949, he was educated partly in the United Kingdom and took on progressively senior roles in Dubai's government from a young age, including overseeing the emirate's police and defense forces before becoming Crown Prince. Under his leadership, Dubai pursued aggressive economic diversification into aviation, tourism, logistics, real estate, and finance, driving landmark projects such as the Burj Khalifa, Dubai International Financial Centre, and the expansion of Emirates airline into a major global carrier. He has also published strategic vision documents outlining long-term economic and governance goals for Dubai and the UAE, and he is a practicing Nabati poet in his own right, publishing verse under his own name that draws on the same Bedouin oral tradition celebrated by earlier Emirati poets. He remains one of the most internationally visible heads of government in the Gulf region.
