Who is Mihai Eminescu?
Mihai Eminescu was a Romanian Romantic poet, novelist, and journalist, widely regarded as the most important poet in the Romanian language and a defining figure of Romanian national culture. Born in Botoșani in Moldavia, he was largely self-educated after leaving school early, working as a prompter for a traveling theater troupe before studying philosophy and law at universities in Vienna and Berlin without completing a degree. He worked as a journalist and editor for the conservative newspaper Timpul in Bucharest, where his political writings on national identity and social conditions were as influential as his verse. His poetry, including the long philosophical poem "Luceafărul" ("The Evening Star") and pieces such as "Odă (în metru antic)" and "Mai am un singur dor," fused folk motifs, German Romantic and philosophical influences (notably Schopenhauer), and a deep melancholic lyricism. He suffered from severe mental illness in his final years and died in Bucharest in 1889 at age thirty-nine. His birthday, January 15, is celebrated annually in Romania as National Culture Day, and his image has appeared on Romanian currency and countless monuments across the country.
