Who is Mighty Sparrow?

Slinger Francisco, known professionally as the Mighty Sparrow, is a Trinidadian calypso singer and songwriter widely celebrated as the "Calypso King of the World." Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, and raised from infancy in Trinidad, he rose to prominence in the 1950s Port of Spain calypso tent circuit and won the Trinidad Carnival Road March and Calypso Monarch titles multiple times over his career, beginning with his breakthrough hit "Jean and Dinah" in 1956, which commented on the social changes following the departure of American troops after World War II. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he recorded hundreds of songs blending sharp social and political commentary, wit, and Caribbean rhythm, addressing themes ranging from colonialism and independence to everyday Trinidadian life, and helped popularize calypso internationally through touring and recordings. He has been honored with Trinidad and Tobago's Trinity Cross (now the Order of the Trinity) and is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of calypso music, shaping the genre's lyrical and performance traditions for generations of artists who followed.
