Who is Mario Benedetti?

Mario Benedetti was a prolific Uruguayan writer born in Paso de los Toros, whose work spans poetry, the novel, the short story, and essays, making him one of the most widely read authors in the Spanish-speaking world. He gained early recognition with poetry collections such as "Poemas de la oficina" (1956), which captured the routines and quiet frustrations of urban office workers, and achieved major success with the novel "La tregua" (1960), the story of a widowed office employee's late-life romance, which was translated into numerous languages and adapted for film. Following the 1973 coup that installed a military dictatorship in Uruguay, Benedetti was forced into exile, living in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain over more than a decade, during which his writing increasingly engaged themes of exile, memory, and political resistance. He returned to Uruguay after the restoration of democracy in 1985 and continued writing prolifically until his death in Montevideo in 2009. His combined body of work, including the frequently anthologized poetry collection "El olvido está lleno de memoria" (1995), made him one of Latin America's most beloved literary voices.
