Who is Maironis?
Maironis, born Jonas Mačiulis, was a Roman Catholic priest and Lithuania's most celebrated national poet, active during and after the Lithuanian National Revival. Ordained a priest and later serving as rector of the Kaunas Priest Seminary, he combined his religious vocation with a prolific literary career written under the pen name Maironis. His landmark 1895 poetry collection "Pavasario balsai" ("Voices of Spring") gave powerful lyrical voice to Lithuanian patriotism, historical memory, and love of the homeland at a time when the Lithuanian language and press were suppressed under Russian imperial rule. He also wrote historical dramas and verse narratives drawing on Lithuania's grand ducal past, helping to shape a modern Lithuanian national consciousness rooted in language and history. Many of his poems were set to music and remain widely sung as patriotic and student songs in Lithuania today. Maironis is regarded as the central figure of Lithuanian Romantic and national poetry, and his work profoundly influenced the generation that achieved Lithuanian independence in 1918.
