Sir Lynden Pindling

Prime Minister and Political Leader · 1930–2000

Who is Sir Lynden Pindling?

Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling was a Bahamian lawyer and politician who served as the first Premier and then first Prime Minister of the Bahamas, leading the country from 1967 until 1992. Born in Nassau in 1930, he studied law in London before returning home to enter politics, becoming leader of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in 1956. In the pivotal 1967 general election, Pindling's PLP tied the ruling United Bahamian Party, and with the support of independent members he was invited to form the first Black-majority government in Bahamian history, an event still celebrated as Majority Rule. He went on to lead the Bahamas to full independence from Great Britain on 10 July 1973, becoming the nation's first Prime Minister. Widely honored as the "Father of the Nation," Pindling dominated Bahamian politics for over two decades, overseeing the growth of tourism and offshore banking, before his government lost power in the 1992 general election, a defeat he conceded with notable grace, declaring that the voice of the people is the voice of God. He died in Nassau in 2000.
