Who is Lionel Aingimea?
Lionel Rouwen Aingimea was born on 2 September 1965 into the Deiboe tribe of Nauru. He trained as a lawyer in Australia and built a career in human rights and legal advocacy, working with the Regional Rights Resource Team, serving as a public defender in the Marshall Islands, and lecturing in law at the University of the South Pacific. He entered public service as Secretary for Justice under President Baron Waqa in 2013, was elected to Parliament for the Meneng Constituency in 2016, and served as Assistant Minister for Justice and Border Control. Following his re-election in 2019, Parliament elected him President of Nauru, narrowly defeating David Adeang by a vote of 12 to 6. He served as President from 27 August 2019 to 28 September 2022, a period that included Nauru's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, before moving to serve as Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He later returned to cabinet as Minister for Justice, Foreign Affairs, and several other portfolios, and in April 2026 was appointed Nauru's inaugural Vice President following a constitutional reform creating that office for the first time in the country's history.
