Lillie Langtry

Actress and Society Beauty · 1853–1929

Who is Lillie Langtry?

Lillie Langtry was born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton on 13 October 1853 in St Saviour, Jersey, the daughter of the Dean of Jersey, William Corbet Le Breton. She moved to London after her first marriage and quickly became one of the most celebrated society beauties of the late Victorian era, admired for the classical features captured in Sir John Everett Millais's 1878 portrait "A Jersey Lily", from which her enduring nickname derives. She became a close companion of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and used her fame to launch a stage career, becoming one of the first society women of her era to perform professionally in theatre in both Britain and the United States. She later took American citizenship, built a career as a stage actress and theatre manager, and became a notable owner and breeder of racehorses. She died in Monaco in 1929 and remains one of Jersey's best-known historical figures, commemorated on the island with plaques, a pub bearing her name, and enduring local pride.
