Who is Lennart Meri?

Lennart Meri was an Estonian writer, documentary filmmaker, and statesman who served as the second President of Estonia from 1992 to 2001, the first president after Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union. Born in Tallinn to diplomat and Shakespeare translator Georg Meri, Lennart spent much of his childhood abroad, attending nine schools in four languages before his family was deported to Siberia during the Soviet occupation, an experience that shaped his lifelong dedication to Estonian sovereignty and culture. He graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in history and languages in 1953 and spent decades documenting the history and cultures of the Finno-Uralic peoples through writing and film, becoming a member of the Estonian Writers' Union in 1963. His best-known book, Hõbevalge (Silverwhite, 1976), is a sweeping travel memoir exploring the ancient history of Estonia and northern Europe. As Estonia's foreign minister from 1990 to 1992 and later as president, Meri played a central role in guiding the country's transition to independence, negotiating the withdrawal of Russian troops with President Boris Yeltsin in 1994 and steering Estonia toward eventual integration with the European Union and NATO. He died in Tallinn in 2006, remembered as one of the most respected figures in modern Estonian history.
