Who is Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop?
Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop was the last independent Damel, or king, of the Cayor kingdom in what is now Senegal, remembered as a central figure of Senegalese resistance to French colonial expansion. Born around 1842, he ruled Cayor during a turbulent period as French forces under Governor Louis Faidherbe and his successors pushed to extend railway lines and colonial control across Senegal's interior. Lat Dior resisted the construction of the Dakar-Saint-Louis railway through his territory, viewing it as a strategic and cultural threat, and led a prolonged campaign against French incursions, at times allying with and at times opposing neighboring Senegalese states and Islamic reform movements of the period. He was also notable for his adoption of Islam and his complex relationship with Muslim clerics of the era. Lat Dior was killed in battle against French colonial troops in 1886. He is honored today as a national hero of Senegal, commemorated in monuments, street names, and school curricula as an enduring symbol of resistance to colonial domination.
