Who is Krom Ngoy?
Krom Ngoy, honoured as Oknha Krom Ngoy, is one of the most beloved folk poets in Cambodian history and is often called a father of modern Khmer didactic poetry. He composed and recited verse that carried moral teaching (chbap) to ordinary villagers in a plain, memorable style, so that his lines passed easily into everyday speech. Working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he travelled and performed his poems aloud, which is a central reason so much of his wisdom survives as spoken proverb rather than only on the page. His verses stress diligence, honesty, learning, gratitude to parents, and care in speech. Because his work was oral and widely copied, some lines attributed to him blend with the broader folk tradition; where authorship is uncertain this platform marks it as traditional rather than claiming certainty.
