Kristijonas Donelaitis

Lutheran Pastor and Poet · 1714–1780

Who is Kristijonas Donelaitis?

Kristijonas Donelaitis was a Lutheran pastor and poet who served the parish of Tolminkiemis in Lithuania Minor, then part of the Kingdom of Prussia. Alongside his pastoral duties, he wrote poetry in Lithuanian at a time when German dominated the region's literary and administrative life. His major work, the hexameter poem "Metai" ("The Seasons"), depicts the annual cycle of peasant life, labor, nature, and moral reflection among Lithuanian serfs, blending vivid realism with moral and religious commentary. Donelaitis did not see the poem published in his lifetime; it was compiled and printed in 1818, nearly four decades after his death, by the scholar Ludwig Rhesa. "Metai" is widely regarded as the founding masterpiece of Lithuanian-language literature and one of the earliest major literary works composed in Lithuanian, distinguishing it from the largely religious and utilitarian texts that preceded it. Donelaitis is commemorated today as the father of Lithuanian fiction, and his image has appeared on Lithuanian currency and postage stamps.
