Who is Kossi Efoui?

Kossi Efoui is a Togolese playwright and novelist born in 1962 in Anfoin, Togo. He studied philosophy at the University of Lomé and later obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Benin. As a student in the 1980s he took part in a non-conformist student movement opposing the government of President Gnassingbé Eyadéma, an experience that shaped the political undercurrents running through much of his later writing. His first play, "Le Carrefour," was staged in Lomé and later published in France and the United States, establishing him as a distinctive theatrical voice from West Africa. In 1992 he left Togo for France, living there in a form of self-imposed exile that allowed him to continue writing and publishing more freely. His debut novel, "La Polka," appeared in 1997, followed by "La Fabrique de cérémonies" in 2001, which won the prestigious Grand Prix littéraire d'Afrique noire, one of the most significant honors for Francophone African literature. His 2008 novel "Solo d'un revenant" won the Prix des cinq continents de la francophonie. Efoui's work is known for blending absurdist theatrical technique with sharp political and social commentary on post-colonial African societies, and he continues to be studied and performed internationally.
