Who is Traditional Kiribati Wisdom?
Traditional Kiribati Wisdom gathers the taeka n rabakau — proverbs and wise sayings — carried orally among the I-Kiribati people across the sixteen coral atolls and reef islands of the Gilbert Islands chain that today form the Republic of Kiribati. These sayings have no single named author; they are the shared inheritance of elders (unimwane) who speak from the boti, their family's designated seating place inside the maneaba, the open meeting house that remains the centre of community decision-making on each island. Rooted in a way of life historically built around fishing, canoe travel between low-lying atolls, extended kainga family networks, and collective responsibility, these proverbs teach patience, restraint from acting on first impulse, respect for guidance from elders, and fairness in communal decision-making, alongside the core belief that every person is sacred. The concept of te katei ni Kiribati, "the Kiribati way," describes this same living inheritance of customs, manners, and knowledge that I-Kiribati people regard as central to their collective identity. This platform records the widely documented forms of these sayings, as gathered in published cultural and wellbeing resources, and presents them as traditional rather than attributing them to any one person, in keeping with its accuracy standard.
