Politician and Newspaper Editor · 1865–1959
Who is Julius Sundblom?
Julius Sundblom was an Åland politician, farmer, and newspaper editor who became the leading figure of the Åland movement in the early twentieth century. After the First World War and Finland's independence, he led the campaign for the Åland Islands to be reunited with Sweden, organizing petitions among the mostly Swedish-speaking island population and presenting the islanders' case internationally. When the League of Nations ruled in 1921 that Åland would remain under Finnish sovereignty but be granted extensive autonomy, demilitarization, and guarantees for its Swedish language and culture, Sundblom shifted his efforts toward building and defending that autonomy from within. He was briefly imprisoned by Finnish authorities for his separatist activities before the settlement, but afterward became a long-serving member of the Åland provincial council and a central voice in island politics for decades. He is widely remembered in Åland as a founding figure of the islands' self-government, and his advocacy helped shape the autonomy arrangement that still governs Åland today.
