Who is Juan Bosch?
Juan Bosch Gaviño was a Dominican writer, historian, and politician who became the country's first democratically elected president following the end of the long Trujillo dictatorship. Opposed to the Trujillo regime, Bosch spent more than two decades in exile, during which he also became one of the most respected Spanish-language short-story writers of his generation, publishing acclaimed collections alongside historical and political essays. After Trujillo's assassination in 1961, Bosch returned to the Dominican Republic and won the presidency in the country's first free elections in 1962, taking office in early 1963. His government, which pursued land reform and a new constitution, was overthrown by a military coup after only about seven months in power, an event that later contributed to civil conflict and United States intervention in 1965. Bosch continued to write and remained active in politics for decades afterward, founding the Dominican Revolutionary Party splinter that became the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in 1973. He is remembered both as a literary figure of lasting importance and as a symbol of the struggle for democratic governance in the Dominican Republic.
