Philosopher, Lawyer, and Statesman · 1780–1834
Who is José Cecilio del Valle?
José Cecilio del Valle was a Honduran-born philosopher, lawyer, journalist, and statesman regarded as one of the leading intellectuals of Central America's independence era. Born in Choluteca in 1780, he studied law and philosophy in Guatemala City, earning his law degree in 1803 and beginning a career that combined legal practice with wide-ranging scholarship in economics, natural science, and political theory. He is best known as the principal drafter of the Act of Independence of Central America, signed in Guatemala City on 15 September 1821, which formally ended Spanish colonial rule over the region. He later served in the government of the short-lived Central American Federation and was elected president of the federation in 1834, though he died before taking office. Known by the honorific "El Sabio" (the wise one), Valle championed Enlightenment ideals of equality before the law, education, and rational governance, and published extensively on the economic and scientific development of the isthmus. His writings remain foundational texts in Central American intellectual history.
