John Osborne

Political Leader — Chief Minister of Montserrat · circa 1936–circa 2006

Who is John Osborne?

John Osborne was a Montserratian politician who founded the People's Liberation Movement and went on to serve as Chief Minister of Montserrat, leading the territory's government during the 1970s and 1980s. His time in office spanned a period of economic development and growing international attention for the small island, including its emergence as a recording destination after the opening of AIR Studios Montserrat, which drew major international musicians to the island during his tenure. Osborne's political career reflected the broader push across the smaller British Caribbean territories for greater local control over economic and social policy while remaining part of the British Overseas Territories structure. After the catastrophic eruptions of the Soufriere Hills volcano beginning in 1995 destroyed Montserrat's capital, Plymouth, and its original airport, a new airport was constructed in the safer northern part of the island and named the John A. Osborne Airport in his honor, cementing his place in the island's modern history and its recovery from disaster.
