Jeremy Moore

British Army Major-General · 1928–2007

Who is Jeremy Moore?

Sir Jeremy Moore was a British Royal Marines officer who commanded the land forces of the British Task Force during the 1982 Falklands War. A veteran of earlier campaigns in Malaya and Borneo, where he was decorated for gallantry, he was appointed Commander Land Forces Falkland Islands and arrived in the islands in late May 1982 to take charge of the ground campaign following the British landings at San Carlos. Under his command, British forces fought a series of engagements across East Falkland, including the battles for Goose Green, Mount Longdon, and Mount Tumbledown, advancing on the capital, Stanley. On 14 June 1982, Argentine commander General Mario Menendez surrendered to Moore in Stanley, ending the seventy-four-day war. Moore personally accepted the surrender and sent the telegram to London confirming the islands' recapture, a message that became one of the most quoted communications of the conflict. He later served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff before retiring from the military.
