Who is Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani?

Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani was the son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani and is widely regarded as the founder of modern Qatar. He assumed leadership of Qatar's tribes in the late nineteenth century at a time when the peninsula was contested by the Ottoman Empire, the Al Khalifa rulers of neighboring Bahrain, and expanding British interests in the Gulf. His most decisive achievement came in March 1893 at the Battle of Al Wajbah, when Qatari forces under his command defeated a much larger Ottoman garrison sent to assert direct control over the peninsula, an outcome that preserved Qatari autonomy and cemented his authority as ruler. Beyond his military and political leadership, Jassim was known as a religious scholar and poet, valuing education and Islamic learning among his people. He worked to unify the scattered Qatari tribes under a single leadership centered on Doha, laying the political and territorial foundations of the country that would later become the State of Qatar. He is honored annually on Qatar National Day, which commemorates his accession to power.
