Who is J.A.G.S. McCartney?
James Alexander George Smith McCartney, known throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands as JAGS McCartney, was a Turks and Caicos Islander politician who became the territory's first Chief Minister and remains its only officially recognized National Hero. Born on Grand Turk to a Jamaican barrister father, Harvey O. B. Fernandez McCartney, and a Turks and Caicos mother, Sally McCartney (née Taylor), he was born with a serious heart condition and, in the absence of a heart specialist on the islands, was sent to Jamaica for medical treatment and to complete his secondary education at Happy Grove High School. He returned home and founded the People's Democratic Movement (PDM), a grassroots party formed to address the social and economic problems facing Turks and Caicos Islanders. When ministerial self-government was introduced, McCartney was sworn in as the islands' first Chief Minister on 31 August 1976, taking office at just 31 years old, making him one of the youngest democratically elected heads of government in the world at the time. During his tenure he pushed for greater self-determination, encouraged early tourism development including the Club Med hotel on Providenciales, and made representations to the United Nations on behalf of the territory. He died on 9 May 1980, when a private plane carrying him from Washington, D.C. to Atlantic City crashed near Vineland, New Jersey. His memory is honored annually on JAGS McCartney Day (formerly National Heroes' Day, renamed in 2020), and the Grand Turk international airport bears his name.
