Ivan Gundulić

Baroque Poet · 1589–1638

Who is Ivan Gundulić?

Ivan Gundulić was a Baroque poet and dramatist from the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik), widely considered the greatest poet of the Croatian Baroque and one of the central figures of older Croatian literature. Born into a noble Ragusan family, he received a classical education and briefly served in the government of the small aristocratic republic. His major work, the unfinished epic "Osman," narrates the downfall of the Ottoman sultan Osman II and reflects both Christian European anxieties about Ottoman power and a Slavic literary consciousness, blending historical narrative with religious and moral themes. He also wrote the pastoral drama "Dubravka," celebrated for its allegory of liberty, and religious poems such as "Suze sina razmetnoga" (Tears of the Prodigal Son), a meditation on repentance drawing on the biblical parable. Gundulić's poetry is marked by rich ornamentation, dramatic tension, and deep engagement with both Italian Baroque style and South Slavic identity. His portrait later appeared on Croatian currency, and his birthday is commemorated as Croatian Language Day. He remains a cornerstone author in the Croatian literary canon.
