Who is Ivan Cankar?
Ivan Cankar is widely regarded as the most significant Slovenian prose writer and playwright, and one of the leading figures of the Slovenian Moderna literary movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in the town of Vrhnika into a poor family, he studied in Vienna, where he was exposed to European literary and social currents that shaped his sharply critical, socially engaged style. His works combine naturalistic and symbolist elements with pointed social commentary on poverty, hypocrisy, and political corruption in Slovenian society under Austro-Hungarian rule. Among his best-known works are the novella "Hlapec Jernej in njegova pravica" (The Bailiff Yerney and His Rights), a parable of social injustice, the autobiographical novel "Na klancu" (On the Slope), and the satirical drama "Kralj na Betajnovi" (The King of Betajnova). Cankar was also an active public speaker and essayist who addressed the national and social aspirations of the Slovenian people. He died in Ljubljana in 1918, shortly before the collapse of Austria-Hungary, and remains the most widely translated and studied Slovenian author.
