Who is Isa Boletini?
Isa Boletini was an Albanian nationalist leader and military commander born in the village of Boletin near Mitrovica, in what is today Kosovo. He became one of the most prominent Kosovo Albanian figures in the Albanian National Awakening, leading highlander fighters in repeated uprisings against Ottoman authority in the early twentieth century in defense of Albanian autonomy and language rights. He took part in the major Albanian revolts of 1910 and 1911 and was among the delegates present at the Assembly of Vlorë in November 1912, where Albania's independence from the Ottoman Empire was formally declared; a well-known photograph shows him at Ismail Qemali's side during the declaration. Known for his imposing presence, traditional highland dress, and fierce loyalty to the cause of Albanian self-rule, Boletini continued fighting for Kosovo's inclusion within an independent Albanian state even after the London Conference of 1913 assigned Kosovo to Serbia. He died in 1916 in clashes with Montenegrin forces near Podgorica. He is remembered in Kosovo and Albania as a folk-hero figure of the national independence movement.
