Historian, Poet, and Statesman · circa 1937–circa 2022

Who is Sir Howard Fergus?

Sir Howard Fergus was a Montserratian historian, poet, and public servant widely regarded as one of the island's most important cultural figures. He spent much of his career documenting Montserrat's history in detail, authoring the widely cited history "Montserrat: History of a Caribbean Colony," which traces the island's path from early Irish and English settlement and its plantation-era enslaved African population through colonial administration to modern self-government. Alongside his historical scholarship, Fergus published poetry reflecting on Montserratian identity, landscape, and the trauma of the Soufriere Hills volcanic disaster that devastated the island beginning in 1995. He served the island in public life, including as a long-serving Deputy Governor and Speaker of the Legislative Council, and was affiliated with the University of the West Indies as a resident tutor for Montserrat. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to Montserratian history, literature, and public service, he was declared a National Hero of Montserrat and was knighted, becoming one of the island's most honored citizens.
