Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit

Syndic and Political Reformer · circa early 19th century–circa late 19th century

Who is Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit?

Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit was a nineteenth-century Andorran syndic and politician from the prominent Areny-Plandolit family of Ordino, one of the most influential landowning families in the valleys during that era. He is chiefly remembered for his role in championing the Nova Reforma (New Reform) of 1866, a landmark political reform that broadened eligibility to vote and to stand for Andorra's General Council, moving the small co-principality's governance away from a narrow circle of powerful families toward a wider and more structured system of representation. The reform is regarded by Andorran historians as an early milestone on the long road toward the country's eventual full parliamentary democracy, achieved with the 1993 Constitution. The Areny-Plandolit family's fortified stone residence in Ordino, built up over generations from wealth in the iron forge trade, survives today as the Casa d'Areny-Plandolit museum, preserving furnishings and documents connected to the family and offering visitors insight into the life of Andorra's traditional ruling elite during the period of Guillem's political activity.
