Who is Franz Josef II, Prince of Liechtenstein?
Franz Josef II was the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein from 1938 until 1989, and is remembered as the first prince of the modern era to make Liechtenstein his permanent residence, moving the princely household from Vienna to Vaduz Castle. He assumed the throne shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War and steered the small principality through the conflict while preserving its neutrality, a delicate task given Liechtenstein's proximity to Austria and Switzerland and its historical ties to the German-speaking world. In the postwar decades he presided over Liechtenstein's transformation from a modest, largely agricultural country into one of the wealthiest states in the world by per-capita income, encouraging the growth of light industry, financial services, and international business registration that reshaped the national economy. He also worked to modernize the country's constitutional and administrative institutions while preserving the monarchy's role, and he expanded Liechtenstein's diplomatic and international presence. His decision to reside permanently in the principality is widely credited with strengthening national identity and the personal bond between the ruling family and the Liechtenstein people.
