Who is France Prešeren?
France Prešeren is regarded as Slovenia's greatest poet and the central figure of the Slovenian literary Romantic movement. Born in the village of Vrba in the Upper Carniola region, he trained as a lawyer in Vienna before returning to practice law in Ljubljana, though he struggled for recognition and financial stability throughout his life. His poetry, written in a period when Slovene was still establishing itself as a literary language distinct from German, elevated the language to a vehicle capable of the highest artistic expression. His major works include the sonnet cycle "Sonetni venec" (A Wreath of Sonnets), the narrative poem "Krst pri Savici" (Baptism on the Savica), and the drinking song "Zdravljica" (A Toast), whose seventh stanza, celebrating peace and friendship among nations, was adopted as the text of the Slovenian national anthem in 1989. Much of his verse was shaped by his unrequited love for Julija Primic. He died in Kranj in 1849, and February 8, the anniversary of his death, is observed in Slovenia as Prešeren Day, a national cultural holiday.
