Tuvalu's First Governor-General · 1911–1998

Who is Sir Fiatau Penitala Teo?

Sir Fiatau Penitala Teo was born on 23 July 1911 in Funafuti. He was appointed a Chief in the House of Chiefs of Niutao in 1945 and was honoured across his long public career, receiving the MBE in 1956, the Imperial Service Order in 1970, and a knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1979. When Tuvalu (the former Ellice Islands colony) became independent of Britain in 1978 and its people chose to retain Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, Teo was appointed the country's first Governor-General, a post he held from 1 October 1978 to 1 March 1986, during which he oversaw Tuvalu's first peaceful transfer of government following the 1981 election. After stepping down he was reappointed a Chief in 1997. He was married to Uimai (Tofiga) Teo, and his sons carried the family's public service forward: Samuelu Teo represented Niutao in Parliament from 1998 to 2006, while Feleti Penitala Teo served as Attorney-General and later became Tuvalu's Prime Minister in 2024. Sir Fiatau died on 25 November 1998.
