Who is Euphrosyne of Polotsk?
Born Predslava, a princess of the Principality of Polotsk in what is now Belarus and granddaughter of Vseslav the Sorcerer, she refused an arranged marriage and took monastic vows under the name Euphrosyne. She founded convents and a monastery near Polotsk, where she established a scriptorium for copying religious manuscripts and personally taught reading and writing. Around 1161 she commissioned the renowned Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk, an ornate enamel-and-gem reliquary cross crafted by master jeweler Lazar Bohsha, which became one of the most treasured artifacts of Belarusian cultural heritage before disappearing during the Second World War; a modern reconstruction was completed in 1997. Late in life she undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where she died and was buried near the Mar Saba monastery; her relics were later returned to Polotsk. Canonized by the Orthodox Church, she is venerated today as the patron saint of Belarus and remains a lasting symbol of education, faith, and Belarusian identity.
