Who is Sir Emile Gumbs?

Sir Emile Gumbs was an Anguillian physician who became one of the territory's leading political figures in the decades following its 1980 formal separation from St Kitts and Nevis. Trained as a doctor, he practiced medicine on the island before entering public life, and he went on to serve as Chief Minister of Anguilla through the 1980s and into the 1990s, a period in which the territory built out the government institutions, infrastructure, and tourism-based economy that followed its new constitutional status. His administration focused on steady, cautious development of Anguilla's small economy, including its emerging luxury tourism sector, while working within the framework of Anguilla's relationship with the United Kingdom as a British Overseas Territory. For his decades of public service to Anguilla, he was honored with a knighthood. He remained a respected elder statesman in Anguillian public life in the years after leaving office, remembered for guiding the island through its formative years of self-government.
