Who is Efua Sutherland?

Efua Theodora Sutherland was a Ghanaian playwright, director, poet, children's author, and cultural activist regarded as one of the founders of modern Ghanaian theatre. Educated at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, Homerton College at Cambridge, and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, she returned to Ghana in the 1950s and devoted her career to building indigenous performance traditions into a modern national theatre. She founded the Ghana Drama Studio, the Ghana Society of Writers, the Ghana Experimental Theatre, and the Kodzidan ("Story House") community storytelling project, which brought traditional Akan Anansesem (Ananse spider tales) into structured public performance. Her best-known plays, including Foriwa (1962), Edufa (1967), and The Marriage of Anansewa (1975), blended Akan oral storytelling techniques with modern dramatic form. She also founded Afram Publications, an early African-owned publishing house, and was influential in establishing the study of African performance traditions at the university level, as well as advocating for children's literature and welfare in Ghana.
