Who is Sir Dunstan St Omer?
Sir Dunstan St Omer was a Saint Lucian painter widely regarded as the island's national artist, best known for designing Saint Lucia's national flag, adopted upon independence in 1979 and refined from an earlier 1967 design. Born in Castries in 1927, he trained with the Trinidad Art Society and developed a distinctive style that fused Catholic religious imagery with local Afro-Caribbean life and landscape. His best-known works are the large murals inside the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries, including a depiction of a Black Madonna and Child that became one of the most recognized images of Caribbean religious art. He painted murals and altarpieces in churches across Saint Lucia over several decades, consistently portraying biblical scenes with Black Saint Lucian figures, fishermen, and everyday island settings rather than conventional European iconography. St Omer was a close friend of Nobel laureate Derek Walcott, who portrayed a version of him as the painter character Gregorias in the epic poem Omeros. He was knighted for his contribution to Saint Lucian art and culture, and he died in 2015.
