Who is Didier Drogba?
Didier Drogba is one of the most celebrated African footballers of his generation, known both for his goal-scoring career in Europe and for his role as a symbol of unity during a period of civil conflict in Côte d'Ivoire. Born in Abidjan, he developed as a striker in French football before joining Chelsea FC in England in 2004, where he became one of the club's all-time leading goal scorers and a central figure in multiple Premier League and domestic cup victories, including scoring the decisive penalty that won the 2012 UEFA Champions League final for Chelsea against Bayern Munich. He was named African Footballer of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2009. As captain of the Ivory Coast national team, nicknamed the Elephants, he led the country to several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and its first World Cup appearances. He is especially remembered in Côte d'Ivoire for a televised appeal for peace after the national team's 2005 World Cup qualification, made during the country's civil war, and for later helping arrange a symbolic match in the rebel-held north. Beyond football, he founded the Didier Drogba Foundation, which supports health and education projects in Côte d'Ivoire.
