Denis Mukwege

Gynecologic Surgeon and Nobel Peace Laureate · 1955

Who is Denis Mukwege?

Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologic surgeon renowned for his decades of work treating survivors of sexual violence in the conflict-torn eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Born in Bukavu in South Kivu, he trained in medicine in Burundi and France before returning home to practice. In 1999, amid the wars that devastated eastern Congo, he founded Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, which grew into a leading center for treating and rehabilitating women who survived rape used as a weapon of war, combining surgery with psychological, social, and legal support. Mukwege has repeatedly spoken out internationally about the link between the exploitation of Congo's mineral wealth and the violence fueling the conflict, drawing both wide recognition and threats against his life, including a 2012 assassination attempt he narrowly survived. In 2018 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict, a recognition that brought global attention to the suffering of Congolese survivors and to his hospital's continuing work.
