Sir Curtly Ambrose

Cricketer (Fast Bowler) · 1963

Who is Sir Curtly Ambrose?

Sir Curtly Ambrose was born in the village of Swetes, Antigua, and became one of the most feared fast bowlers in the history of Test cricket. Standing six feet seven inches tall, he combined extreme pace with unusually steep bounce and pinpoint accuracy, taking 405 wickets in 98 Test matches for the West Indies between 1988 and 2000, a tally that remains among the highest by any fast bowler. He formed a devastating new-ball partnership with fellow Antiguan and Barbudan-born Courtney Walsh, and together they anchored the West Indies bowling attack through the final years of the team's era of world dominance. Renowned for his intense on-field focus and reluctance to give interviews, Ambrose let his performances speak for him, famously reducing entire batting line-ups to collapse on several occasions. Following his retirement, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, played bass guitar in a reggae band, and has worked as a cricket commentator, coach, and selector for West Indies cricket.
