Sir Colville Norbert Young

Linguist, Educator, and Governor-General · 1932

Who is Sir Colville Norbert Young?

Sir Colville Norbert Young is a Belizean linguist, educator, composer, and statesman who served as the second Governor-General of Belize from 1993 to 2021, the longest tenure of any Governor-General in Commonwealth history. Born on 20 November 1932, he studied at St Michael's College in Belize before earning a BA in English from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, and later a doctorate in linguistics from the University of York in England, becoming a Fulbright Scholar along the way. As a scholar, Young devoted decades to documenting and legitimizing Belizean Kriol, authoring "Creole Proverbs of Belize" (1980, revised 1988) — a foundational collection of 263 traditional Kriol proverbs and sayings — alongside other works including "From One Caribbean Corner" and "Pataki Full" (1990). He was knighted in 1994 following his appointment as Governor-General. Beyond scholarship and public service, Young introduced the steelpan to Belize, co-founding the country's All Stars Steel Band and composing more than forty musical works blending classical and Creole styles. He retired as Governor-General on 30 April 2021.
